Materials and Construction
What materials are used in your beds?
Our beds are constructed out of furniture grade plywood finished with fine hardwood veneers, and with solid hardwood for the trims. This combination provides superior strength, dimensional stability, long-term durability, and the natural beauty of real wood. Our most common wood species include birch, maple, cherry, oak, and walnut.
Where are your beds made?
Most of our wall beds and desk beds are built right here in our own production facility in Brooks, Oregon. We also sell similar beds manufactured by three other companies that share our commitment to superior quality. They are located in Washington, California, and British Columbia, The companies that supply our cabinet beds have outsourced their production to Malaysia and Viet Nam.
Do you use less expensive materials such as particle board?
No! Our beds are made to last. Many mass-produced Murphy beds rely heavily on particle board, which although is less expensive, is less durable. Beds made with this material can weaken, sag, or fail over time—especially with regular use.
How long do your beds last?
With proper use, our beds are designed to last 20 to 30 years and more. This is a major difference compared to lower-cost beds, which often need replacement within 5–10 years.
Installation and Wall Requirements
Can a Murphy bed be installed on any kind of a wall?
As long as the wall is in good condition, we can safely install a bed on almost any wall, whether it be wood stud, metal stud, lath and plaster, or concrete. However, a wood-stud wall compromised by dry rot is not a safe location for tall beds such as vertical wall beds and desk beds.
Do installations require drilling into the wall and floor?
Our beds do not require fastening to the floor. Nor do our cabinet beds need to be fastened to either wall or floor. However, Murphy beds and larger double and queen desk beds all need to be securely anchored to the wall.
What kind of fasteners do you use?
We use specialized fasteners appropriate for the different kinds of wall systems. The peneterations are small and easily filled if you later move the bed.
Delivery
Do you deliver and install your beds?
For our customers who live within our delivery zone, which is about a 150 mile radius from our plant in Brooks, we handle both delivery and professional installation. This ensures your bed is properly assembled, safely anchored, fully functional before we leave.
Is installation included in the price?
Yes. If you live within 50 miles of our plant in Brooks delivery and installation is free.
What if I live beyond 50 miles?

Do you ship beds?
Yes, we can ship to customers who live far away. Call for a price for this service.
What areas do you serve?
We mainly serve the Portland Metro area and much of western Oregon as well as southern Washington. However we also occasionally deliver to more distant locations. Safety and Use
Are Murphy beds safe?
Yes—when properly installed, Murphy beds are very safe. Our beds are: * Professionally installed * Securely anchored to structural supports * Equipped with reliable lifting mechanisms * Safety is a top priority in both design and installation.
Can children use your beds?
Yes. Some of our beds are designed expressly for children. All our beds can certainly be used by children, however we recommend that children use our beds under adult supervision, especially when the beds are being opened and closed.
Do the beds lock in place?
Our cabinet beds and desk beds all have latches to keep them securely closed. Our Murphy beds, although they do not require locks, are designed to remain securely in position when open or closed.
Comfort and Ease of Use
How comfortable are these beds?
Our Murphy beds and desk beds take mattresses that are 10" to 12" thick--depending on the particular bed--and provide great comfort. Similarly, our cabinet beds, which come with 6" memory foam mattresses, are also very comfortable. Customers who come to our showroom often remark how surprised they are at how comfortable these mattresses are.
Can I use my own mattress, or do I need a special one?
Some of our customers provide their own mattress, and that's Ok as long as the mattress is not too thick and the weight is neither too light nor too heavy. Most of our customers prefer to purchase one of our mattresses that are well suited to our beds both for size and weight.
Can I leave the bedding on?
Our Murphy beds and desk beds are designed so that you can leave the blankets on, tucked in, when storing the bed. Cabinet beds, since they use a folding mattress must be stripped of bedding before the bed is stored.
Do I need to clear off my desk before pulling the bed down?
Our transforming desk beds utilize a special balancing mechanism that keeps the desk level at all times. You do not need to remove your laptop, moderately sized monitor, and other items from the desktop when the the bed is lowered for use.
