The Situation
When Daniel and Erica moved into a newly built two-bedroom ADU behind Erica’s son’s family home in Portland, they knew every square foot would need to serve multiple purposes.
The ADU offered affordability, proximity to family, and a simpler lifestyle—but at just under 1100 square feet, space planning became essential.
The second bedroom presented the biggest challenge.
They wanted it to function as:
A comfortable guest room for visiting family and friends
A home office for Erica’s remote work
A flexible space for exercise and hobbies
A room that still felt open and uncluttered day to day
But after measuring the room, they quickly realized a traditional queen bed would dominate the space.
“Once we mapped everything out, we realized a regular bed would make the room feel permanently crowded,” Daniel explained. The couple explored Murphy beds, but wall mounting wasn’t ideal for their ADU layout. They also wanted modern, compact furniture rather than a bulky built-in installation.
That’s when they discovered the contemporary CabinetBed called Kitsilano, one of the Elite Series of Cabinet Beds on the Hiddenbed of Oregon website.
The Challenge
Daniel and Erica had a clear vision for the room:
Clean, minimalist aesthetics
Furniture that matched the ADU’s modern design
Quick and easy setup for overnight guests
Durable, long-lasting materials
A healthier indoor environment for compact living
Many space-saving beds they researched online relied heavily on particle board or MDF construction. Some looked temporary or overly utilitarian, while others sacrificed comfort for compactness.
They wanted something that felt intentional—something that blended naturally into the home rather than looking like a compromise.
The Solution: A Contemporary CabinetBed
The CabinetBed transformed the room completely.
Closed, it functioned as a sleek contemporary cabinet with clean geometric lines, flat handle-free panels, and a minimalist appearance that complemented the ADU’s architecture.
Rather than making the room feel like a permanent bedroom, the cabinet blended into the space as a refined and heirloom-quality piece of furniture
When guests arrived, it was converted into a comfortable queen-size bed in approximately 30 seconds.
Because the CabinetBed is free-standing, no wall mounting or permanent installation was required—an important advantage in the ADU.
Features That Made the Difference
Premium Birch Plywood Construction
The couple appreciated that the cabinet was built from high-quality birch plywood rather than particle board or MDF.
The furniture-grade plywood gave the cabinet a sturdier, more refined feel while helping support healthier indoor air quality. Unlike many lower-cost engineered wood products, the birch plywood used in the CabinetBed is formaldehyde free, making it especially appealing for smaller living environments where air quality matters.
Comfortable CertiPUR-US® Certified Mattress
Comfort was equally important.
The CabinetBed included a CertiPUR-US® certified mattress designed for both comfort and healthier indoor living. CertiPUR-US® certified foams are made without ozone depleters, formaldehyde, heavy metals, and certain harmful chemicals, while also being tested for low VOC emissions.
For Daniel and Erica, that added peace of mind in a compact ADU where airflow and indoor air quality play a bigger role in everyday comfort.
Contemporary Minimalist Design
The uncluttered lines and handle-free panels helped maintain the calm, open atmosphere they wanted throughout the home.
Instead of looking like “hidden furniture,” the CabinetBed became part of the room’s overall design aesthetic.
Quick Daily Functionality
The bed could be opened in about 30 seconds, making it practical for frequent overnight guests without turning setup into a time-consuming process.
Integrated Storage
A full-length storage drawer underneath provided convenient space for bedding, pillows, and blankets—eliminating the need for additional storage furniture in the small room.
The Result
Today, the second bedroom functions as a true multi-purpose space.
Most days, it serves as Erica’s office and yoga room while still maintaining plenty of open floor space.
When friends or family visit, the cabinet quickly converts into a comfortable queen-size guest bed without requiring the room to be rearranged.
“The room feels open and usable every day instead of feeling like a guest room that sits unused most of the year,” Erica said.
The couple also appreciated how naturally the cabinet fit into the ADU’s contemporary aesthetic instead of competing with it visually.
Why It Worked So Well in an ADU
In smaller homes like ADUs, flexibility becomes essential.
A traditional bed dedicates an entire room to a single purpose. A thoughtfully designed CabinetBed allows the same square footage to adapt throughout the day and throughout the year.
For Daniel and Erica, the CabinetBed helped them:
Maintain a clean, modern aesthetic
Preserve valuable floor space
Comfortably host overnight guests
Create a room with multiple daily uses
Avoid permanent wall-mounted furniture
Invest in durable, premium-grade materials
Support a healthier indoor living environment
In the end, the solution wasn’t simply about saving space.
It was about making a smaller home feel more functional, more intentional, and more comfortable.
